Guessing from the title of this post, I believe you already know what I want to talk about. Yes. You are right. Web Development. And being a blogger, I’m certain you know what it is, even if it’s a limited information.
You see, most of the bloggers these days are lucky. You read someone else’s blog and then at the end, you’ll seee an appealing statement “blog at WordPress.” And then you go ahead and set up an account. Publish your first post and boom! your blogging life begins. No stress at all in designing a webite. If you are that kind of person, don’t be embarrassed because you are not alone.
Cool. Back to web development. In this blog post, I will talk about the following areas:
- What Web development is.
- Who a web developer is.
- How to become a developer and
- How to make money using the website development skills.
Beautiful areas to talk about, right? Well, without further or do, let’s get to business.
1. What is Web development?
Web development broadly refers to the tasks associated with developing websites for hosting via intranet or internet. The web development process includes web design, web content development, client-side/server-side scripting and network security configuration, among other tasks.
Haha. That must have been so hard to understand. I didn’t either. I actually got this definition from one of the books I once read about web. So then, What is Web development? My understanding of Web development is that it is the coding or programming that enables website functionality, per the owner’s requirements. It mainly deals with the non-design aspect of building websites, which includes coding and writing markup. Web development ranges from creating plain text pages to complex web-based applications, social network applications and electronic business applications.
The web development hierarchy is as follows:
- Client-side coding
- Server-side coding
- Database technology
For the server side, PHP is the coding language that matters here. PHP (recursive acronym for PHP : Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML.
My favourite for the database technology is mySQL. This is where you get to store your users passwords and other information. Web hosting packages come with this product.
2. A web Developer.
A professional who does all these is called a web developer. And in the next section, I’m going to teach you how to become one.
3. How to become a Web Developer.
I spent four years at the University studying Physics and about one year to study Web Development. My point is, with dedication and hardwork, you can become a web developer in less than six months. So, where do you start from? Simple. Today, there are many schools offering classes on web development, some for free, some for a few bucks. The good thing is, most of the schools are available online. And by the way, learning the web never stops. New ideas every day. Here are some of the schools I can recommend for you:
I owe my coding skills to these schools. You’ll get amazing study materials from these schools. And if you want to perfect your coding skills, buy a course from Udemy. And specifically go for Complete Web Developer Course, taught by Rob Percival. Rob goes through alot in this course which is really nice. I think he is clear and informative and seem to know what he is talking about. Rob also seems quite active in the comments etc which is nice.(havent really needed to contact him myself but can see him answering comments). There are many “challenges” to go through what you just learned which is also great. Really makes you think back to what you learned.
4. How to make money with your website development skills.
The most amazing thing is being able to use your skills to get money. Legitimate money. As a web developer, new in the field, build your own website, buy a domain name and have it hosted. Try to get a few gigs from the freelancers sites. And every time you complete a task for a client, ask them if you could add their projects to your portfolio. Build websites for your friends at a cheaper price. Sharpen your skills. And finally, get involved with mega projects. You are a web developer for goodness sake, make money with your skills. Also, don’t be afraid to teach people how to develop websites for some extra cash.
Apart from building a website, there are other things that make a website great. One of them is a beautiful design. Here, it all depends on your creativity and your ability to put down your imagination into something substantive. The colors, fonts, menus, the forms, tables and the look of the website as a whole. Some claim to teach this but to me, I think it all depends on one’s level of creativity.
Another thing is the SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Search engine optimization ( SEO ) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine’s unpaid results—often referred to as “natural”, “organic”, or “earned” results. It is the umbrella term for all the methods you can use to ensure the visibility of your website and its content on search engine results pages (SERPs). There are lots of ways of achieving this, ranging from how you write your posts to how you write your codes for the website.
Finally, with the web development skills, you can be able to redesign your WordPress site. A good thing, right. Or even set up a new one. Why am I even telling you this? Ow! Just remembered, I’m telling you this so that you I can help you redesign yours. I know you are tired of seeing a boring platform everyday and you’d like to make a difference. Well I am your guy. Also, if you’d like to build a new website or set up a new WordPress blog, I’m still your guy. Just drop me a line here and I will get back to you.
Well, I think the information I have shared with you is enough to get you started. Please don’t be afraid to start this journey. You never know. You might be the next Mark Zuckerberg.
All the best. Happy coding.
